Chapter 1

A Pragmatic Philosophy

It's Your Life

You have agency over your career. If your current job isn't working, change it. The industry is full of opportunities — don't let inertia keep you stuck.

The Cat Ate My Source Code

Take responsibility. Don't make excuses or blame others. When something goes wrong, provide options instead of lame excuses. Say "here's what I can do" instead of "it wasn't my fault."

Software Entropy

One broken window — a piece of bad code, a poor design decision — starts the rot. Once a codebase shows signs of neglect, it deteriorates rapidly. Fix broken windows as soon as you find them. If you can't fix it immediately, at least board it up (add a comment, raise an issue).

Stone Soup and Boiled Frogs

Sometimes you need to be a catalyst for change. Start with something small and well-done, then gradually expand. People find it easier to join an ongoing success than to start from scratch.
